What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Botox is the brand name of the neurotoxin protein developed by Allergan Inc. Originally invented to help treat crossed or wandering eyes, BOTOX® Cosmetic is most commonly used today to treat the effects of aging and give users a youthful appearance. When applied by a Certified Injector, BOTOX® Cosmetic is very effective at removing wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.

How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

The bacterium where BOTOX® Cosmetic comes from, clostridium botulinum, is naturally found all over the world, including in forests, lakes, soil, and more. It’s also commonly found in mammals, fish, shellfish, and other animals. For the most part, it’s harmless. But if the bacteria spores transform, it can become a neurotoxin that disrupts the signaling process allowing neurons to communicate. And that is how muscles are frozen and lines disappear.

It is extremely important, always, to work with a certified injector with extensive training that specializes in BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.

Popular BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Areas

  • Forehead Lines – Horizontal forehead lines are the lines that traverse your forehead and can extend from one side to the other. They can be seen when you raise your eyebrows. In some people, who frequently and consistently make facial expressions, the horizontal forehead lines are also seen at rest. They are caused by using the muscle in your forehead called the frontalis to raise your eyebrows. When you repeatedly raise your eyebrows, these wrinkles will slowly appear over the years. BOTOX® Cosmetic will relax the frontalis muscle used to raise your eyebrows. This will prevent the horizontal forehead lines from getting deeper and oftentimes make them disappear completely.
  • Frown Lines & Furrowed Brows – Glabella lines (frown lines) are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows, resulting in a tired or angry look. These lines—sometimes referred to as “elevens” thanks to their shape—are the result of repeated gathering or knitting of the area between the eyebrows over time and a loss of elastic tissue as we age.  BOTOX® Cosmetic is extremely effective when applied to this area. An experienced injector can subtly smooth these frown lines, resulting in a rejuvenated and more relaxed appearance. If the glabella lines are deep-set, the practitioner is likely to recommend treatment with dermal filler in combination with BOTOX® Cosmetic, which is a highly effective way to fill and smooth the area simultaneously.
  • Crow’s Feet – Crow’s feet are the fine lines that form around the eyes.  They are primarily caused by sun exposure, but smoking will also contribute to the formation of crow’s feet.  Loss of skin elasticity as we age will also contribute to the formation of crow’s feet. One of the quicker, easier BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments – crow’s feet can be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections into the lateral orbital lines for optimal results.
  • Bunny Lines Bunny – Bunny lines describe straight, slightly diagonal lines that extend from both sides of the nose, beneath the bridge, when someone smiles or laughs. Bunny lines also appear when you scrunch up your nose, such as when you laugh or smile deeply. Presumably, they’re named as such because they vaguely resemble a pair of rabbit ears or whiskers. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections applied to the transverse nasal muscles on both sides of the upper nose will greatly decrease the appearance of Bunny Lines.
  • Jelly Roll (Undereye Small Bags) – “Jelly rolls” are bulges located just below the eyes that are visible when you’re laughing, smiling, or squinting. They may cause puffy eyes or the appearance of exhaustion. A small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic under the lash line should help provide a more alert appearance with a softer, less puffy under-eye area.
  • Gummy Smile – “Gummy smile” refers to when a large portion of your upper gums show when you smile or laugh. Individuals who have a gummy smile are typically self-conscious when they talk or smile and will usually try to hide it. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been shown to effectively treat the appearance of a gummy smile and is a much more manageable procedure to receive than surgery. With two or more injections on either side of the mouth & under the nose, the muscles on the face can relax and the lips can begin to cover up the gums, thereby creating a more aesthetically appealing smile.
  • Lip Flip  A lip flip is a quick, in-office cosmetic procedure that lasts about 10 to 20 minutes. It involves the injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic into your Cupid’s bow, which is the middle of your upper lip, and into the corners of your mouth. The injection temporarily relaxes the muscles around your lip. This causes the part of your upper lip that’s inside your mouth to “flip” upward and outward, giving your lip a fuller appearance.
  • Peri-oral Lines (Smoker Lines) – Peri-oral wrinkles are the fine or deep lines that occur around the mouth and lips. As we age this area is often one of the first to develop wrinkles. Like most wrinkles on the face, sun exposure, genetics and smoking (smoker’s lines), and loss of skin elasticity contribute to fine lines around the mouth. BOTOX® Cosmetic applied to the orbicularis oris muscles can soften the lines surrounding the mouth allowing for a more youthful, smooth appearance around your lips and mouth.
  • Marionette Lines – Marionette lines are one of those aptly named wrinkles that conjure up a pretty clear visual.  Marionette lines run from the outer corners of the lips to the outer corners of the chin. Because of their drooping quality, marionette lines can make a face look perpetually pouty and unhappy. BOTOX® Cosmetic applied to the depressor anguli oris and/or trangularis muscles will soften the lines allowing for a more youthful, happy appearance around the mouth and lower face.
  • Mentalis Dysfunction (Chin Dents) – The mentalis muscle is a pair of muscles located at the tip of the chin. It acts as the primary muscle of the lower lip. This muscle provides stability to the lower lip to allow it to pout.  Loss of elasticity can cause chin dimples or dents.  A light BOTOX® Cosmetic injection applied to the mentalis muscle relieves the problem of “chin dents.”
  • Massetters (Hypertrophy of and Jawline Slimming) – BOTOX® Cosmetic application to the masseter muscle is ideal for patients who are grinding and clenching their teeth or for individuals who have frequent tension or migraine headaches. This treatment is also extremely effective for women who do not like the shape of their faces due to a square or masculine jawline and desire a more feminine appearance. Patients can expect headaches and clenching to go away within a week and will see the full effects of jaw thinning about one month after treatment when the muscle has had time to atrophy.
  • Depressor Anguli Oris Injections (DAO) – These are the muscles on either side of the mouth that depress the corners of the mouth (hence the Latin name Depressor Anguli Oris). Some people tend to carry a lot of tension around their mouths which causes unintentional habitual frowning. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections into the DAO allow other muscles to elevate the corners of your mouth and reduce your frowning expression.
  • Vertical Platysma Bands – BOTOX® Cosmetic is specifically intended to manage the hanging platysma muscle. The platysma appears as two muscle bands that hang down vertically and has also been called a “turkey neck”.  The best candidate is someone who has very early platysmal neck sagging or athletes whose muscles bulge when they grimace or move their neck excessively.  BOTOX® Cosmetic works by weakening the platysma muscle and provides counter pull and lifts the neck upward.
  • Brow Lift – BOTOX® Cosmetic injections create a lifting effect by relaxing the muscles that pull down on the eyebrows. This not only raises the ends of the eyebrows into a more pleasing arch but also opens the eyes, making you look looking rested and rejuvenated.
  • Both men and women love this popular that can take years off of your appearance, with zero downtime and minimal pain – so it can easily be done during a lunch break.
  • Hyperhydrosis or Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
  • Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. It refers to any abnormal sweating, such as sweating when it’s not hot. People who sweat excessively often soak through their clothing or drip sweat. Regular antiperspirants don’t work well for those with this condition.
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are a fantastic treatment option for people with hyperhidrosis. You may be a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic if your sweating fails to improve with prescription antiperspirants. BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to reduce sweating in other areas, such as the palms of your hands, feet, and face.
  • When you receive BOTOX® Cosmetic injections directly into the area of your body that sweat excessively, your overactive nerves are essentially paralyzed blocking the release of acetycholine.  Acetycholine is the body’s chemical that stimulates the sweat glands.
  • Our male and female patients are extremely happy with the results of this treatment.
  • Horizontal Neck Lines and Text Neck – As we get older, horizontal creases or bands naturally form on the neck. Also repetitively looking down at your phone can also cause necklines or “text neck”. These lines can be reduced by injecting small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic above and below the wrinkles wherever they appear – this could be all the way around the neck. Some practitioners refer to this as a BOTOX® Cosmetic ‘necklace’. These types of lines can be treated with a combination of BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers.
  • Microtox – “Micro Botox” delivers BOTOX® Cosmetic in a new way via diluted microdroplets.  Rather than inject right into the muscle layer, a diluted BOTOX® Cosmetic mixture is injected into the surface of the skin where the oil and sweat glands are located. Because superficial muscle fibers attach to the skin’s surface, partially blocking the activities of these muscles, oil glands, and sweat glands will diminish fine lines & wrinkles, sweat secretion, acne, and rosacea. Pore size will also improve for better skin texture due to a decrease in the oil and subsequent sweat plugs that create blackheads. Microtox is a less potent strength that is injected superficially over a larger area it is expected to last approximately four weeks.
  • Depression – And if we didn’t already LOVE BOTOX® Cosmetic enough, now we have another reason! A recent study using safety surveillance data of BOTOX® Cosmetic found significant associations between its use and antidepressant effects, across several indications and different injection sites, according to the study’s authors.  Previous high-quality studies have found BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment has been associated with antidepressant effects when administered to the glabellar or forehead region of the face, they noted. Botox is an FDA-approved treatment to temporarily reduce the movement of facial muscles and reduce the appearance of dynamic and static lines on the face. It is a protein that attaches to the receptor of the muscle and in turn, reduces the movement of that muscle.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin, but it doesn’t mean it is dangerous. It is a very safe treatment and is backed by over 20 years of published studies. When in the hands of a highly trained and credentialed injector, it is considered safe and part of a harmless, temporary solution. We also use BOTOX® for migraine prevention as well as excessive sweating of the underarms, hands, and feet.

Although BOTOX is very popular today, it was first discovered in the 1800s.

Botox® Cosmetic – also called botulinum exotoxin – is a neuromuscular inhibitor. When it is injected into a muscle – it prevents muscle contraction thus causing the muscle to relax. The relaxed muscle allows the wrinkles, furrows, and creases to smooth out and become unnoticeable.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to help treat fine lines and wrinkles, sweating, chronic pain, depression and migraines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved for cosmetic use to improve the look of fine lines and superficial wrinkles between the brows caused by everyday brow furrowing as well as for migraine headaches.

Commonly treated areas include crow’s feet, grimacing lines between the brows, as well as horizontal lines on the forehead. In addition, we also commonly treat the lips, and the depressor muscle of the mouth to kick the corners of the mouth up, as well as the neck bands to help tighten the jawline and neck. These are just a few but there are many other muscles we treat with BOTOX® Cosmetic!

Most procedures last less than 30 minutes.

BOTOX® Cosmetic isn’t permanent. Most procedures last between 3-6 months.

Injectable appointments at Dr. Rudderman’s office are scheduled for 30 minutes. The length of time depends upon the extensiveness of your treatment.

Dr. Rudderman’s patients rarely require downtime. Most of his patients typically resume normal activities right after their treatment.

Rarely – some patients may fail to see improvement in their condition after treatment. Some numbness, swelling, and/or a burning sensation, and bruising are normal in many cases and resolve on their own in a few days.

Insurance covers medically necessary treatments which do not include BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. When BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for medical treatment, coverage should be available. Be sure to ask about this.

NO – BOTOX® is a fairly painless treatment. You may feel a little discomfort with the small needle pokes but we use distracting tools to keep you as comfortable as possible. Patients say they experience only a temporary burning sensation.

NO – anesthesia is typically not needed, but our injectors can use local anesthetic if needed.

We recommend getting your BOTOX® Cosmetic quarterly or four times a year. This frequency will give you optimal results with line prevention.

You may begin to notice results within 24-48 hours after your appointment; however, you can expect your full result 2-3 weeks after your treatment.

We recommend avoiding blood thinners after your appointment such as Advil, Aleve, exercise, and alcohol for 24 hours after your appointment. Please also avoid facials and massages for 5-7 days after your appointment. If you want your BOTOX® to kick in faster, you can exercise the muscles we treated by animating them 15 times total and this will help! If you have any pinpoint bruising, you may apply arnica gel to the area to expedite the healing process, but this is totally optional.

BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used by pregnant or lactating women or by people who have had a reaction to the drug in the past.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is also used in the prevention of wrinkles as well, by prohibiting you from making the facial gestures that cause wrinkles.
